Global Communities

An online community is a social network that uses computer support as the basis of the communication among members instead of face-to-face interaction. (Mason, R & Rennie, F, 2006). According to Wikipedia, internet is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other technologies. It is a consistent of global system of interconnected computer networks that connects millions of people. Besides that, there are few problems that might occurs the online community which is spamming, flaming and unwanted solicitation.

The first problem that the netizen need to face with is spamming. Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. E-mail spam, also known as junk e-mail which is a subset of spam that involves nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by e-mail. So that, the online community such as the Government of Canada has introduced anti-spam legislation called the Electronic Commerce Protection Act at the House of Commons to fight spam to deal with spam. Besides that, as individual, to prevent the spam from spread, the netizen needs to track the source to find out where each mailer is getting the address, use false middle initials or add any phony suffixes to the name.

Secondly, flaming is a big thing in the world of cyber space of an offensive and personal attacking nature but yet so many people find this sort of behavior entertaining. No doubt everyone who has used some sort of chat method on the internet has become a victim or an aggressor of internet flaming. Flaming is when a person goes into a chat room, forum, discussion or email and deliberately causes offense to someone by personal attacks and insults, not just their opinions but everything, their personality, their lifestyle, their family and friends even if they have never met the person or know anything about them. There are a few ways to against an attack of flaming. Avoid discussions that are prone to flamers or flaming wars. If someone posting a topic that is controversial issue, and as politely as the individual should avoid from joining the discussion as this will prevent people from attacking them.

Unwanted solicitation is one of the problem that the community online need to deal with. For instance, we have received a message from unknown person that provide games through online. When we play the games and reply to the unknown person, without we realized our credit was decrease because of that games. So, it is called unwanted solicitation because the unknown person did not include the terms and condition towards the games that provided. Consequently, the community would ignore the unwanted solicitation by not easily trust any message that have no terms and condition.

To sum up, the internet is become necessary in a daily life that provides fast communication and information. In spite of that, the online community should be aware of the problems that might occur them when using the internet service like spamming, flaming and unwanted solicitations. In these day and age, the online community have been acknowledge on how to deals with those problem. Thus, they know face the problem as well as they can use the internet easily without worried about those problem because they know what to do if they got spamming, flaming and unwanted solicitations
